Sainsbury's new store opens

1st March 2007

Since 1997 thousands of residents said they didn't want to see:
• more cars, pollution and congestion
• more pressure on local shops
• our local shops, livelihoods and diversity at risk

BUDD, Stop the Store Alliance, residents and traders said retail development should be centred on London Road, but now Sainsbury's plan to draw £19m of trade away from it.

Making life taste bitter

Supermarkets drive out local competition and retailers, with negative effects on local economies. communities, choice and diversity.

Their practices are unsustainable, but it is others who pay the price - the true costs of cheap food are carried by others, like UK farmers unable to negotiate a fair price for their products, clocking up food miles and pollution, UK workers on poverty wages, or overseas workers packing fruit and veg who are not paid enough to feed their families.

Shop local, shop independent!!

By avoiding supermarkets and supporting local traders, you could end up with a better deal for yourself, contribute positively to environmental sustainability and to the local economy (over 90% of money spent in this supermarket will leave the local area), keep other services like Post Offices and pharmacies viable, and keep your neighbourhood interesting.
